Listen to Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers on iHeartRadio

Tom Petty says he's "tremendously excited" about his new album with The Heartbreakers.

The rocker tells "Rolling Stone" the group's upcoming studio project is "not like anything" they've ever done before.  Petty admits it's tough to describe what's different about it.

But he explains that they started out by playing the blues, and it's "morphed into something that's kind of like songs on 1994's "Wildflowers or 1979's "Damn The Torpedoes."

Petty adds that he's "just so into it," and he can't wait to return to the studio to finish it.  The group expects to release their still-untitled effort next year.

The album will be their follow up to 2010's Mojo.
