As we continue to look for ways to help those who are most vulnerable, here's a strong suggestion from Dallas County. Avoid grocery shopping until April 4th. If you MUST go grocery shopping, don’t buy items with WIC marked on their price tag. Why? Well, WIC funds are disbursed on the first of the month, and if you're not familiar, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) provides federal grants to states for supplemental foods, health care referrals, and nutrition education for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and to infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk.
Many of these families' benefits were depleted more quickly because children are staying home from school and some families are going hungry right now. Give these families space to shop and please respect their needs by not buying items with a WIC shelf tag unless you absolutely need them.
