How Weird Is This? "Ballooning"

If creepy, crawly spiders terrify you and you can't think of anything worse than walking through a cobweb, you'll want to stay far away from Victoria, Australia.

The mostly-rural state in southeastern Australia has experienced extreme flooding recently, causing spiders to seek higher ground and shelter by covering towns in cobwebs. Some areas are actually completely blanketed by the webs -- a phenomenon known as "ballooning." It allows for thousands of spiders to be safe from the floods and also gives them something to hang on to when the strong winds blow. Photos and videos of the massive webs carpeting the area have gone viral. (7 News)
