Steve Vai has been reunited with one of the loves of his life… a guitar. But this isn’t just any guitar- it’s a guitar that acquired the nickname “the swiss cheese guitar.” Vai posted on Instagram that the guitar, which gained fame when he used it to film “Yankee Rose” with David Lee Roth, was found and returned to him after 36 years.
"Reunited, and it feels so good,” Vai wrote. “Oddly enough, after going missing 36 and a half years ago, my custom Joe Despagni 'Swiss Cheese' guitar was finally returned to me.” Vai revealed a man named Iván Gonzáles Acosta found the guitar in his grandparents attic and, after an online search, connected it to the legendary guitarist.
The guitar got its “swiss cheese” moniker because of holes cut into its body. Vai also explained that the previous owner of the home must have purchased the guitar and left it after moving away, but that the guitar looked “as if it had been placed in a case and never played for 36 years.”
