The Eagles released their sixth and final studio album of the '70s and last one for 28 years this Wednesday, September 25th, in 1979.
The Long Run was their first album with bassist Timothy B. Schmit who replaced founding member Randy Meisner, and it was the last one with guitarist Don Felder who was shown the door in 2001.
While the lyrics dealt with longevity and posterity, the irony is that they were imploding and broke up a year later.
Meant to be a double album, Don Henley says the title track was partially a response to reporters who labeled them "passé" as disco and punk were the new rage. The chorus of the title track says it all when Henley sings, "Who is gonna make it/ We'll find out in the long run".
The follow-up to Hotel California, released in 1976, includes the singles "Heartache Tonight," "I Can't Tell You Why," and the title track. Also included is Joe Walsh's "In the City," which is a staple in their concerts.
The Long Run has been certified seven-times platinum with sales exceeding eight-million copies in the U.S.
The Eagles resume their 20-date residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas on Friday and Saturday.
