55 Years Ago Today, Led Zeppelin Proved No Sophomore Slump

Released on October 22, 1969 Led Zeppelin II is no doubt one of Led Zeppelin's greatest, but one of the most influential albums in rock history. Many rock critics cite it as a blueprint for heavy metal.  What makes Led Zeppelin II swing is the blend of heavy AND raunchy - thanks to a heavy influence of Delta and Chicago blues.  Led Zeppelin II went on to sell 3 million copies within the first six months, taking the Number One spot from the Beatles 'Abbey Road.' The single "Whole Lotta Love" hit Number Four in the U.S. in January 1970 setting the table for things to come. Robert Plant famously told Rolling Stone magazine "Our whole lives changed, It was such a sudden change we weren't sure how to handle it."
