With several players who would eventually make it to the NFL, the 1988 Dallas Carter High team was one of the greatest in Texas history, famously beating the the Odessa Permian team immortalized in Friday Night Lights in the state semifinals en route to a state championship.
After the state championship things fell apart as several of the football players participated in a string robberies. Many were convicted. Some were sent to prison.
Their title was later stripped after a long legal battle eventually ended with the determination that one of Carter's star players, Gary Edwards, had violated Texas' no-pass, no-play law.
