Rejected Sgt. Pepper's Album Artwork

A psychedelic painting commissioned for -- but never used in -- The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's album is going to be sold at auction.

The artwork was meant for the album's inner sleeve until The Beatles were persuaded to use photos of themselves instead.

A dreamy sunset with an owl, a parrot, a peacock, a pool with lilies, fireworks and a mermaid-shaped fountain, the painting was once owned by Ringo Starr. Sotheby's in London is now selling it at auction. The bidding -- which runs through Monday -- opened at $70,000 and is expected to top $100,000. (Irish Times
