The worst kept secret in the NHL was made official today. The Dallas Stars will host the 2020 Winter Classic outdoor hockey game at the Cotton Bowl on January 1st, 2020. Commissioner Gary Bettman made it official during the 2nd intermission of today's game at Notre Dame Stadium between the Bruins and Blackhawks. The Stars opponent is still to be determined, and according to reports will be decided in a group effort by the Stars, the NHL and NBC.
This is exciting for a number of reasons. First, the Stars have never participated in an outdoor game, let alone HOST. Second, with the announcement, Dallas becomes the southernmost city to host the NHL Winter Classic. Third (and most importantly of course) if tradition holds, the home team PA Announcer gets the privilege of working the game, and last time I checked, THAT'S ME!
