R.I.P. - Dr. John

 

Legendary New Orleans musician Dr. John has passed away. The singer, Mac Rebennack, died early yesterday of a heart attack at the age of 77. 

“Towards the break of day June 6, iconic music legend Malcolm John Rebennack, Jr., known as Dr. John, passed away of a heart attack,” a statement from his family reads. “The family thanks all whom shared his unique musical journey & requests privacy at this time. Memorial arrangements will be announced in due course.” 

Dr. John, known for combining elements of jazz, R&B, rock, funk and blues in his music, won six GRAMMY Awards, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011. His best known hit is the tune, “Right Place, Wrong Time,” which peaked at number nine on the charts. His 1968 debut album, “Gris-Gris,” was ranked as one of “Rolling Stone’s” “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.”

The singer was a staple at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, with his last performance there taking place in 2017.
