Rock and Roll Hall of Famers and heavy metal heroes Metallica have advanced their worldwide philanthropic efforts this week by helping a Romanian association build the country's first children's cancer hospital.

The donation to Daruieste Viata (which translates to Give Life) came ahead of the band's sold-out concert in Bucharest, Romania, Wednesday, Reuters reports.

The €250,000 ($279,000) gift came through Metallica's All Within My Hands foundation.

Construction on the pediatric oncology hospital began in mid-2018. The project is expected to be completed in 2020, having raised donations from 260,000 people and nearly 2,000 companies.

Despite years of strong economic growth and billions in European Union funding, Romania has one of the EU's least developed infrastructures, due to a culture of weak public administration, corruption and bureaucracy.

The current government has repeatedly postponed plans to build three new EU-funded regional hospitals, according to Reuters.
