An unearthed video brings it back to Kurt Cobain’s surprise solo set in the small California town of Castaic. Fans filled up the Castaic Lake Amphitheatre to see Sonic Youth, Pavement and Mudhoney, and they got a surprise from the Nirvana frontman, too.
Cobain joined Mudhoney for their cover of Fang’s“When The Money Rolls In,” which Nirvana also covered live. After that, he played some solo songs including his cover of Leadbelly’s“Where Did You Sleep last Night,” famously performed during Nirvana’s “MTV Unplugged” set.
Sacramento Music Archive’s Shayne Stacy recently uploaded the restored footage of the Leadbelly cover. She’s also recalled seeing Courtney Love and baby Frances Bean Cobain at the show.Check out the clips to the right.
