Ever since they entered the hub city of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada for the NHL post-season tournament, the Dallas Stars have been underdogs. Not many picked them to beat the Calgary Flames. They did in 6 games. Hardly anyone expected them to get past Nathan MacKinnon and the high flying Colorado Avalanche. They did in 7 games. Even fewer had the Stars beating the #1 seed in the West, the physical and talented Vegas Golden Knights, and NO ONE had them doing it in FIVE games. They did. Now, for the first time in 20 years, the Stars are headed back to the Stanley Cup Final, and they'll face either the NY Islanders or (most likely) the Tampa Bay Lightning and guess what... they won't be the favorite. Fine by me. Keep embracing the underdog mentality and let's see what happens. While winning the West is an amazing achievement, as you can see above, we're NOT DONE YET!
As the Public Address Announcer for the Stars it is certainly bittersweet. From a selfish standpoint, I'd love to be able to share this phenomenal run in-person with the team, the fans, the Game Presentation Crew, and we ARE doing Official Watching Parties at American Airlines Center. but as I've told everyone who asks, in this forgettable year of 2020, I'll take any memorable sports joy I can get, and so far its been pretty memorable.
