RIP Sean Connery.

Hollywood is mourning the loss of Sean Connery. The iconic Scottish actor has died at age 90, his widow Micheline Roquebrune confirming he passed peacefully in his sleep surrounded by family.

Connery battled dementia in his final years, Roquebrune saying she was with him “all the time.” But dementia “took its toll” on the actor, and he ultimately “got his final wish to slip away without any fuss.” “It was no life for him,” she adds. “He was not able to express himself latterly.”

Connery has won several awards over the course of his decades-long career, including being knighted in 2000, beloved for his iconic role as 007 – he was the first to say the unforgettable line, “Bond, James Bond.” Connery’s friends and co-stars are paying tribute on social media.

  • Pierce Brosnan has paid tribute to the man who inspired him to step into the role, too. “You cast a long shadow of cinematic splendor that will live on forever,” he writes. “Each man in his turn looked to you with reverence and admiration as we forged ahead with our own interpretations of the role.”
  • Another Bond, Daniel Craig, calls Connery “one of the true greats of cinema”in a statement. “He defined an era and a style,” he writes. “The wit and charm he portrayed on screen could be measured in mega watts; he helped create the modern blockbuster.
