By winning the Outstanding Variety Special Emmy for his Disney+ TV special Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium last night (Monday), Sir Elton has become the 19th performer and third music star to gain the coveted EGOT designation for winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. He joins John Legend and Jennifer Hudson as the only EGOTs from the music community.
A knee injury kept Elton from attending the Emmys, but he emailed a statement: “I am incredibly humbled to be joining the unbelievably talented group of EGOT winners tonight. The journey to this moment has been filled with passion, dedication, and the unwavering support of my fans all around the world. Tonight is a testament to the power of the arts and the joy that it brings to all our lives. Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout my career, I am incredibly grateful.”
In addition to Sunday night's Emmy and his six Grammys, Elton won Best Original Song Oscars for “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from The Lion King from 1994 and for “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from Rocketman in 2019. His lone Tony came for Best Original Score with Aida in the year 2000.
