The Grammys have been known to get it wrong, VERY WRONG, but ya gotta give them some credit. Back in 1989, they were trying to keep up with the changes in popular music by introducing a new category, Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance (Vocal or Instrumental). The nominees were Metallica ...And Justice For All, Jane's Addiction Nothing’s Shocking, AC/DC Blow Up Your Video, Iggy Pop Cold Metal, and Jethro Tull Crest of a Knave. Everyone assumed Metallica would be the outright winner. So much so that Jethro Tull frontman Ian Anderson famously said "The record company didn’t think it was really worth the expense of flying us over to Los Angeles because Metallica were favorites to win it.” Alice Cooper and Lita Ford were tasked with presenting the award and you can see the disappointment on their faces when Cooper announced Tull as the winner. To make matters worse, Jethro Tull wasn't there to accept and Metallica was in the audience ready to jump on stage to accept their award.
