This past Saturday, March 2nd, would have been Lou Reed's 82nd birthday, and Keith Richards has marked the occasion by releasing his cover of “I’m Waiting for the Man,” Reed's song as a member of The Velvet Underground on their debut album, 1967's The Velvet Underground & Nico.
The digital single and video are out now, and the song is included on upcoming album, The Power of the Heart: A Tribute to Lou Reed, which also features Rufus Wainwright, Lucinda Williams, Rickie Lee Jones, The Afghan Whigs, Rosanne Cash, Joan Jett and others. It will be out on vinyl & CD on Record Store Day, April 20th.
Commenting on doing the song, Keith says, "To me, Lou stood out. The real deal! Something important to American music and to ALL MUSIC! I miss him and his dog.”
At one time, both Keith and Lou has apartments in New York's Greenwich Village.
Reed died from liver disease on October 27th, 2013 at his home in East Hampton, New York. He was 71.
