Released on this day in 1982, Diver Down is the fifth studio album by Van Halen. It spent 65 weeks on the album chart in the United States and by 1998 sold four million copies in the United States. Five of the twelve songs on the album are covers, the most popular being the band's update of Roy Orbison's "(Oh) Pretty Woman". The music video, directed by David Lee Roth, would be one of the first banned by MTV as the result of complaints that it made fun of "an almost theological figure" the Samurai Warrior (as played by Michael Anthony in the video) and also because two midgets appeared to molest a woman (actually a Los Angeles area drag queen performer).
In honor of the 42nd anniversary, check out a few videos from the Diver Down era.
