On This Day In 1972 The Rolling Stones Released 'Exile On Main St."

Released in the U.K. on this day in 1972, Exile on Main St. is the 10th studio album by The Rolling Stones. The sprawling 18-track double album was recorded in various stages at multiple locations, including Olympic Studios in London, Keith Richards' mansion 'Nellcote' in France, and in Los Angeles where the literal Main Street influenced the album title. Embracing American rhythm and blues, the album wove varying musical genres, instruments, and even artists into a compelling masterpiece. Many regard the album as one of the greatest in rock history.

In honor of the anniversary, check out a live 1972 performance of "Tumbling Dice" (above) and Cocksucker Blues, the unreleased documentary film chronicling the Stones' 1972 American tour in support of the album (below) which you may need to open on YouTube.
