Van Halen have released a live version of "Top of the World" from the forthcoming deluxe edition of their third of four albums with Sammy Hagar, 1991's For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge.
The song and never-before-seen footage was filmed at the West End Marketplace in Dallas, Texas on December 4th, 1991. It was the free show Hagar promised Dallas after the band cut short their 1988 show at the Cotton Bowl due to his vocal problems. It cost the band close to $200,000 to put it on.
Reflecting on the show, Hagar says, "It was a crazy gig in the middle of the day in the middle of a tour. I love that Eddie [Van Halen] and myself were wearing my Red Rocker clothing. Those were the days."
"Top of the World" was the last track on the album and its second single. It spent four weeks at the top of Billboard's Album Rock Tracks chart, making it their eighth number-one on this chart. It was the only single off the album to crack the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number-27.
