Happy 80th Birthday to The Kinks' Ray Davies

The KinksRay Davies is the latest member of music's octogenarian club as he turns 80 this Friday, June 21st.

The frontman and principal songwriter, he's responsible for all of The Kinks' hits, including "You Really Got Me," "All Day and All of the Night," "Sunny Afternoon," "Waterloo Sunset," "Celluloid Heroes," "Lola," "Destroyer," "Come Dancing" and so many others.

He and The Kinks were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1990, and he went into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014.

Ray has often talked about putting The Kinks back together, having last recorded and toured in 1993, but nothing's come of it.

He's written two books -- his "unauthorized autobiography" X-Ray, and one of short stories, Waterloo Sunset. He's made three films, Return to Waterloo in 1985, Weird Nightmare (a documentary about Charles Mingus) in 1991, and Americana.

In January 2004, he was shot in the leg while chasing thieves who stole his girlfriend's purse as they walked in New Orleans.

Also in 2004, he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire, by Queen Elizabeth, and he was knighted in 2017.

Ray released his last album, Our Country: Americana Act 2, in 2018.

Then there's his younger brother and Kinks bandmate Dave Davies, whose Rock & Roll Hall of Fame trophy was for sale on eBay, but he wasn't the one selling it.

He says, "Regarding eBay listing for my RRHOF award statue has been made without my consent. I lost track of my award years ago and didn’t know where it was. If the person bought it at a storage unit it may have been around the time of my 2004 stroke when I was incapacitated in U.K.

"I’m grateful to have made a full recovery, but it’s a shame that I wasn’t contacted. I’m assuming this is what happened.

"This auction makes me very sad."

This listing has since been taken down by the seller and the item is no longer available.

It was being offered for $12,500 or best offer. We've reached out to Dave's office to see if he and the seller have connected and were told that they have "not heard back about how Dave can get his awards statue back.

A rep says, "We were corresponding with the seller who explained that he bought the award after it had been sold allegedly from a storage place, which sold it to a record store. It’s a bit murky. We are still waiting to hear back from the seller to see if he can make arrangements for Dave to get it back."

Late on Thursday afternoon Dave tweeted, "I’m an old man all I want is to drink a beer and watch football now and again. I want my statue back. I don’t play games. Who sold it in the first place? I’m too old for this."

The Kinks were inducted in 1990.
