AC/DC Earns Some Heavy Metal

This week has been a good one for AC/DC as the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has certified their 1980 album, Back in Black, 26-times platinum.

This ties it for the third biggest selling album in the U.S. with the EaglesHotel California. The top two albums are the Eagles' Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975) at 38-million, and Michael Jackson's Thriller at 34-million.

Back in Black is AC/DC's first album with singer Brian Johnson who they hired after the 1979 death of Bon Scott.

The RIAA also bestowed new platinum certifications upon six other AC/DC albums, and nine songs.

Albums:

  • Highway to Hell - eight times platinum
  • Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap - seven times
  • The Razors Edge - six times
  • Live - four times
  • Live - Collector's Edition - four times
  • High Voltage - four times

Singles:

  • "Thunderstruck" - 10 times platinum
  • "Back In Black" - seven times
  • "You Shook Me All Night Long" - six times
  • "Highway to Hell" - six times
  • "T.N.T." - triple
  • "Hell's Bells" - triple
  • "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" - double
  • "Shoot to Thrill" - double
  • "It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock N'' Roll)" - platinum

Last Friday in London, AC/DC were presented with the Legend Award at the O2 Silver Clef Awards in support of the U.K. music-therapy charity Nordoff and Robbins.
