AND THE HITS KEEP COMING......
Jack Russell, the singer of Great White and later Jack Russell's Great White, has died at the age of 63. His death comes just under a month after he'd announced his retirement from the road due to Lewy body dementia.
Russell's career with Great White included a run of three certified platinum and gold albums in the late 1980s and early '90s, and seven Top 10 rock radio songs. But it will forever be marred by the tragic events of February 20th, 2003 when a pyrotechnics-generated fire broke out as the band, which was then billed as Jack Russell's Great White, performed at The Station, a Warwick Rhode Island night club. 100 people died, including the band's guitarist Ty Longley, and over 100 more were injured in what was the deadliest fireworks accident in U.S. history and the fourth-deadliest nightclub fire.
Russell was born in Montebello, California on December 5th, 1960. He formed Great White after meeting guitarist Mark Kendall (whose nickname is Great White) at a concert in 1981. In 1984, the band released their self-titled debut album, the first of 11 studio albums he'd record with them. He also released solo albums in 1996 and 2002, and three Jack Russell's Great White albums between 2017 and 2021. His final release came this year. Titled Medusa, it's a team-up with Tracii Guns of L.A. Guns under the band name Russell - Guns.
Russell's best known songs include Great White's cover of Ian Hunter's "Once Bitten, Twice Shy," which went Top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. His voice also highlights such rock radio hits as "Rock Me," "Save Your Love," "House of Broken Love" and their highest charting rock radio song "Call It Rock & Roll" that peaked at number-four.
Russell is survived by his wife of 12 years Heather Ann Russell and a son, Matthew Hucko.
