Sammy Hagar is marking the 30th anniversary of Van Halen's Balance album by adding its lead single to his set.
"Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do)" was released on January 9th, 1995, and Hagar posted on his social media that "singing this song was always difficult. I wrote the lyrics about Kurt Cobain's death. I wanted the chorus to say 'I wanna tell you what love can do,' but [producer] Bruce Fairbairn, Ed [Van Halen] and Al [Van Halen] wanted to make it more dark and negative...
"Technically it's a brutal song to sing. I painted myself in a corner, but we will be doing it at the residency in Vegas. I'm going to add it to the show." He also shared a video of Van Halen performing it in 1995 on YouTube.
That residency at Dolby Live at Park MGM Las Vegas with Michael Anthony, Joe Satriani and Kenny Aronoff starts on April 30th and runs through May 17th, and Sammy will play Lucas Oil Live at Winstar Casino in Thackerville, Oklahoma on Friday February 21st.
