Sam Moore, who came to prominence as one half of the 1960s soul duo Sam and Dave and subsequently had a long career as a solo artist, died Friday morning in Coral Gables, Florida at the age of 89.
His publicist says he passed away from complications due to an undisclosed surgery.
- Born in Miami, Florida on October 12th, 1935.
- Sang with the gospel groups the Sensational Hummingbirds and the Melionaires in the 1950s.
- Teamed with Dave Prater as Sam & Dave in the early 1960s.
- Signed by Atlantic Records in 1964, they were "loaned" to the label's Memphis-based Stax subsidiary.
- Teamed with songwriter-producers Isaac Hayes and David Porter, they amassed 11 soul chart Top 20s between 1965 and '69, including the pop crossovers "Hold On, I'm Comin'," "Soul Man" and "I Thank You."
- Considered one of the greatest live soul acts of all time, they earned the nicknames "Double Dynamite," "The Sultans of Sweat" and "The Dynamic Duo."
- Split with Prater to go solo in June, 1971, but was unsuccessful and they reunited in August, 1972. That lasted until New Year's Eve 1981 when, after a show in San Francisco, they left and never spoke to each other again. (They hadn't for 13 years of their 21 year partnership.)
- After that, Moore went solo again, this time for good.
- He met his wife Joyce in 1982, who was instrumental in getting him off drugs, which both he and Prater struggled with.
- After Prater hooked up with singer Sam Daniels and went out as Sam & Dave, Moore tried to stop them from using the name and later started the organization Artists and Others Against Imposters.
- Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as part of Sam & Dave in 1992 -- Prater had died by that time, having been killed in a car accident in Georgia in 1988.
- An unreleased 1971 solo album Plenty Good Lovin', produced by King Curtis and with Aretha Franklin on piano, finally came out in 2002.
- Only other solo album was 2006's Overnight Sensational, which featured Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Sting and Mariah Carey.
- He performed "Soul Man" and "Hold On, I'm Comin'" with Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band in 2009 at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's 25th anniversary concert at Madison Square Garden.
- Sang background vocals on Springsteen's 1992 album, Human Touch, on "Soul Driver," "Real World" and "Man's Job." And he did the same three years ago on Springsteen's 2022 soul covers album Only the Strong Survive on "Soul Days" and "I Forgot to Be Your Lover."
Springsteen commented on the loss of his friend, saying, "Over on E Street, we are heartbroken to hear of the death of Sam Moore, one of America's greatest soul voices. There simply isn't another sound like Sam's soulful tenor in American music. Having had the honor to work with Sam on several occasions, he was a sweet and funny man. He was filled with stories of the halcyon days of soul music, and to the end had that edge of deep authenticity in his voice I could only wonder at. We offer our prayers to his wife Joyce and thanks for the immortal recordings Sam left us. God bless."
Roger Daltrey writes: “When I think back to my teenage years and the sounds of the records which would eventually shape my life to come, Sam Moore’s voice still rings fresh in my ears. His pure soul voice was inspirational to me. Thank you, Sam for the great music.”
Jon Bon Jovi wrote, "Having had the opportunity to perform and even record with Sam was humbling and an honor. But knowing that I convinced Dorothea [his wife] to come on what was our first date to see Sam and Dave in the spring of 1980 at the Fast Lane in Asbury Park was one of my fondest memories. Sending my luv to his wonderful wife Joyce. And imagining that heaven sounds a little better with the voice of an Angel."
