Saturday Night Live Celebrates 50 Years

Saturday Night Live celebrated their 50th anniversary with three-hour special on Sunday night. 

Here are the highlights.

— Paul Simon and Sabrina Carpenter opened the show with a performance of "Homeward Bound."

— Steve Martin, who described himself as SNL’s newest “diversity hire,” delivered the opening monologue.

— Tom Hanks introduced an in memoriam segment dedicated to sketches and characters that have "aged horribly."

— Jack Nicholson made a rare appearance introducing Adam Sandler, who sang a special original song dedicated to SNL.

— Bill Murray appeared on Weekend Update to list the top Update anchors.

— Eddie Murphy portrayed Tracy Morgan on the sketch Black Jeopardy.

— Ryan Reynolds appeared on the show from the audience with his wife Blake Lively sitting beside him.

— Paul McCartney closed out the show with a performance. Other performers included Lil Wayne and Miley Cyrus.

MEANWHILE.......

The SNL Homecoming Concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York City Friday night featured a ton of collaborations.

Host Jimmy Fallon opened the show with house band The Roots paying tribute to The Blues Brothers by covering "Soul Man."

Miley Cyrus and Brittany Howard teamed up to cover Queen's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love."

Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam was backed by The Roots for a cover of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' “The Waiting.” He then teased a bit of Elvis Costello and The Attractions’ “Less Than Zero” before switching to Pearl Jam’s “Corduroy.” It was an homage to Costello’s performance on SNL in ’77, when he did a bit of “Less Than Zero” before launching into “Radio Radio."

The B-52s did “Love Shack” and Devo did “Uncontrollable Urge” with former cast member Fred Armisen on drums.

Jelly Roll covered three Johnny Cash songs -- “I Walk the Line,” “Folsom Prison Blues” and “Ring of Fire."

Mumford & Sons were joined by Jerry Douglas on dobro to cover Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Boxer.”

Arcade FireDavid ByrneSt. Vincent and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band performed David Bowie’s “Heroes” and Arcade Fire’s “Wake Up.”

Bonnie Raitt was joined by Coldplay’s Chris Martin on piano for “I Can’t Make You Love Me.”

Adam Sandler introduced “Post Nirvana” -- the surviving Nirvana members Dave GrohlKrist Novoselic and Pat Smear fronted by Post Malone. They did “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

Byrne returned with Robyn to sing her “Dancing on My Own” and the Talking Heads' “This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)."

Cher was backed by The Roots for “If I Could Turn Back Time.”

Jack White and his band closed with a mash-up of Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World” and The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army.”
