Sammy Hagar Unlocks the Reason for "3 Lock Box" and Pranks Mellencamp!

Sammy Hagar recently did a private show in Elkhart, Indiana, and was under the impression that his friend, Indiana native John Mellencamp, was going to perform at the same venue the next night.

So he filmed a short video promising to keep the dressing room clean, and left behind some gifts including cigarettes, a lighter, medium-sized condoms and aspirin.

But, as Hagar says in the video's caption, there was one slight problem. "Little did I know he was playing somewhere else. I never did find out who used that dressing room the next night, but I hope they had a good time."

In a YouTube video celebrating the 40th anniversary of the release of his seventh studio album, “Three Lock Box,” Sammy Hagar tells the story behind the title track. “I never explained this. So many people think ‘Three Lock Box’ is a sexual thing. Well, I’m not opposed to that metaphor,” Hagar says with a laugh.

He says the idea came from a book written by Dick Richmond about treasure hunting, where Richmond explained that if you dived down to a sunken ship and found a box with three locks, it was used to hold something “like the crown jewels.” In the song, Hagar says he’s talking about “mind, body, and spirit” being the three locks to a perfectly balanced life.
