Eric Clapton needed more shelf space 30 years ago this Friday when he swept the major categories at the 35th annual Grammy Awards.
Nominated in 10 categories, he took home six gramophones, all for his Unplugged album:
- Album of the Year - Unplugged
- Song of the Year - "Tears in Heaven"
- Record of the Year - "Tears in Heaven"
- Best Rock Song - "Layla
- Best Male Pop Vocal Performance - Unplugged
Clapton, who has won 17 Grammy Awards, recorded Unplugged on January 16th, 1992 in Windsor, England for the MTV show. The album introduced us to the acoustic version of "Layla," and the first live version of "Tears in Heaven," which he wrote following the death of his four-year-old son Conor in 1991.
Unplugged was released on August 25th, 1992 and has sold more than 26 million copies worldwide.
