Everything Everywhere All at Once was everything at the 95th Academy Awards on Sunday.
The sci-fi comedy won seven trophies, including Best Picture and Best Director. The movie nearly swept the acting categories, with awards going to Ke Huy Quan (Best Supporting Actor), Jamie Lee Curtis (Best Supporting Actress) and Michelle Yeoh (Best Actress).
For Quan — who began his career as a child actor in 1984's Indiana Jones and the Temple Doom — the win marked an increbile comeback. He opened his acceptance speech by saying, "My mom is 84 years old, and she's at home watching. Mom, I just won an Oscar!"
Michelle Yeoh made history as the first Asian woman to win a Best Actress Oscar. She said, "For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibility." She added, "And ladies, don't let anyone ever tell you you are past your prime."
Everything Everywhere All at Once came into the night with a leading 11 nominations.
In another great Hollywood comeback story, Brendan Fraser was named Best Actor for The Whale. In an emotional speech, he said, “I started in this business 30 years ago, things didn’t come easy to me but there was a facility that I didn’t appreciate at the time, until it stopped. I just want to say thank you for this acknowledgement.
THE MONOLOGUE
As expected, host Jimmy Kimmel poked fun at last year's infamous slap. The comedian joked, “Five Irish actors are nominated tonight, which means the chances of a fight just went way up.”
Kimmel also addressed Will Smith winning Best Actor after assaulting Chris Rock, saying, “We want you to have fun, feel safe and, most importantly, we want me feel safe. So, we have strict policies in pace. If anyone in this theater commits an act of violence at any point during the show, you will be awarded the Oscar for Best Actor and permitted to give a 19-minute long speech. But seriously, the academy has a crisis team in place. If anything unpredictable or violent happens during the show, sit there and do absolutely nothing. Maybe even give the assailant a hug.”
Jimmy ended by saying, “And if any of you get mad at a joke and decide you want to get jiggy with it — it’s not going to be easy,” and then mentioned all stars who have his back, including Michael B. Jordan, Michelle Yeoh and his sidekick Guillermo.
