Nick Mason: Dark Side of a "Reunion?"

For years, Nick Mason has been open to a Pink Floyd reunion and his stance hasn't changed. The last performance of the band with Roger Waters and the late Rick Wright was in 2005 at the Live 8 concert in London.

He tells The Sun, "You never know what will be thrown up. I’m tempted to say I’m available for anything.”

Of course with David Gilmour and Waters continuously at odds, it's a very long shot -- especially with Waters contemplating suing Gilmour's wife, novelist Penny Samson, over defamatory statements she recently made about him.

But Mason has nothing bad to say about his former bandmates, praising Gilmour for last year's Floyd song, "Hey, Hey Rise Up" in support of Ukraine, saying, “What David managed to do was a triumph of engineering. Remarkable really and a nice thing to be associated with.”

And as for Waters, Mason loves his re-recording of The Dark Side of the Moon, which will be out later this spring.

“There’s been a lot of rumor about it, suggesting Roger means it to be a spoiler of the original. I’ve only run through it once but I’ve immediately connected with it and think that it is a really great add-on to what we did 50 years ago.

“It’s just terrific, not a spoiler at all. There are slight developments in the lyrics, which make perfect sense to me.

“I love the idea of a piece of work being re-engineered.”

And as for the 50th anniversary of the iconic album, Mason says, "It is extraordinary that Roger wrote lyrics that were as relevant to a 60-year-old as they were to him as a 29-year-old.”

And as for what Mason feels is his best contribution to the album, he says it's the heartbeat in the opening track, "Speak to Me."

“With the heartbeat, we tried using a stethoscope but peoples’ heartbeats are far too fast.

“We wanted it to be more measured but generally you’d need a cardiologist if you were beating at that rate.

“So the sound you hear is a soft beater on the bass drum, my finest moment — I’m ready for the award ceremony now!”

Mason and his Floyd tribute band, Saucerful of Secrets, start a European tour on July 14th in Germany.
