Steely Dan: Reeling in the Schlitz

In 1973, Steely Dan recorded a jingle for Schlitz beer.

Though it was never used, it's come to light as part of the archives of their late recording engineer Roger Nichols.

Steely producer Gary Katz tells the Expanding Dan newsletter that it was "soon after 'Reelin' in the Years' that someone called and asked if the guys would write a song for the Schlitz commercial. As I remember it, Donald Fagen said, 'OK, but we're gonna write it.' By which he meant, they didn't want to do a commercial somebody else wrote."

Guitarist Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, who was in the band then, says they were "pretty young in [their] career, so everybody was reaching out for whatever opportunities there were."

The jingle starts with Baxter talking in Spanish, which Fagen then translates. However, one reason it was scrapped by Schlitz was because Baxter's word for grab, "coger," is slang for sexual intercourse.

In June, the daughters of Roger Nichols posted an unreleased Steely song, "The Second Arrangement," recorded in December 1979 during the sessions for their 1980 album Gaucho.

The cassette tape that the song is on has been framed along with the sheet music, and will soon go on the auction block. Proceeds will go toward the production costs of a documentary Nichols's daughters are making on him.
