Rush singer and bassist Geddy Lee celebrates a milestone birthday this Saturday as he turns 70.
He was born Gary Lee Weinrib on July 29th, 1953 in North York, Ontario, Canada. He became known as Geddy because when his mother said Gary it sounded like Geddy due to her Polish accent.
In 1968 he formed Rush in 1968 with his childhood friend Alex Lifeson. They released 19 studio albums along with numerous live and compilation collections before calling it quits following their final tour in 2015. That was solidified with the death of drummer Neil Peart in 2020.
They were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.
Lee has been married to his wife Nancy since 1976 and they have a son and a daughter and they are grandparents.
In addition to music, Geddy loves to travel, is a rabid baseball fan with Toronto Blue Jays season tickets right behind home plate, a philanthropist, as well as a collector of baseball memorabilia, bass guitars and wine.
In 2018 he published Geddy Lee's Big Beautiful Book of Bass, and his memoir, My Effin' Life, will be published on November 14th.
