As the world continues to open up about mental health, one rock star is sharing that talking about it and seeking treatment changed his life for the better. Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler reveals his long battle with depression and how it took years before he could tell someone who helped.
“I just wish people could have (understood),” said Butler. “‘Cause if you’re a rock star or whatever, if you’re in a band, you’re supposed to be this happy person and you’re up all the time.” Butler also said his attempts to talk to friends and family about his feelings usually resulted in being asked “what happened to you” or “go down the pub and have a couple of pints.”
But finally, Butler revealed he sought medical advice from an American doctor in the 1990s that he got a hold of things. “I was living in St. Louis at the time, and I had a bit of nervous breakdown… (my doctor) told me that I was clinically depressed and he put me on Prozac.” The rocker admits antidepressants helped him deal with his depression, and his battle even inspired the song “Paranoid.”
