55 Years Ago Today: The Allman Brothers Band Was Born

The final piece to The Allman Brothers Band was put into place 55 years ago this Tuesday, March 26th, 1969 -- when Gregg Allman joined his older brother Duane, drummers Butch Trucks and Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson, guitarist Dickey Betts, and bassist Berry Oakley at a rehearsal in Jacksonville, Florida, completing the original six-piece lineup.

Gregg reflected on that day while on stage at the end of the Brothers' final show on October 28th, 2014 at the Beacon Theatre in New York.

That lineup lasted two-and-a-half years until Duane's death in a motorcycle accident on October 29th, 1971. He was 24.

Berry Oakley met the same fate on November 11th, 1972. He was also 24.

Butch Trucks died by suicide on January 24th, 2017. He was 69.

Gregg Allman succumbed to liver cancer on May 27th, 2017. He was also 69.

Dickey Betts was booted from the band in 2000 and no longer performs due to poor health. He's 80.

Jaimoe is 79 and had been leading his own group, Jaimoe's Jasssz Band.

The Allman Brothers Band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.
