R.E.M. Reunite for Songwriters Hall Performance

All four members of R.E.M. sat for their first group interview in 27 years for CBS Mornings, and it's still very clear they have no intention of reuniting.

When asked by interviewer Anthony Mason what it would take for a reunion to happen, bassist Mike Mills joked "a comet."

The original four members of R.E.M. performed in public for the first time in 17 years last night at the Songwriter's Hall of Fame induction ceremony in New York City.

The quartet were inducted by Jason Isbell, who covered "It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" before presenting the group their award. Michael Stipe spoke on behalf of the band and told the audience, "Writing songs and having a catalog of work that we’re all proud of that is out there for the rest of the world for all time is hands-down the most important aspect of what we did. Second to that is that we managed to do so all those decades and remain friends. And not just friends, dear friends."

Then Stipe, Peter BuckMike Mills and Bill Berry performed an acoustic take on "Losing My Religion." It was the first time since their Rock Hall induction in 2007 that the all four members played together in public. (In 2016 they perfomed at a party for their manager Bertis Downs.)

Also during the event Trey Anastasio of Phish inducted Donald Fagen and Walter Becker of Steely Dan with a medley of “Kid Charlemagne” and “Reelin’ In the Years.”
