Texas Sherriff's Kick Off Sting Operation To Catch Porch Pirates

We've all ordered packages online without thinking twice about them being left on our front porch. Well, now local police departments are warning residents about "porch pirates" and for good reason. According to statistics a whopping 20% of North Texans, 1 in 5 people, have been victims of this crime. Black Friday and Cyber Monday kick off the holiday shopping season, and this year, retailers are anticipating an increase in home deliveries due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year, Governor Greg Abbott signed a law making it a felony to steal packages off front porches. Well, in Harris County the Sheriff's Office, is ready to stop them. Investigators said their operation consists of placing multiple decoy packages with an attached tracking device on people's porches. If a thief takes one of the GPS-tracked packages, investigators will receive an alert and can follow it in real-time. And, when a thief opens the package, a camera will start taking photos of the suspect. Learn more in the video above.
